Bring Your Palm Branches!

Passion Sunday, or Palm Sunday as it used to be called, is coming up on March 28. We invite you, like those who welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem, to cut your own palms for our procession into the Worship Center that morning. The morning's service starts with the joyful reception of Jesus as king and then recounts the events of that week, as the same people who welcomed Jesus turned against him and quickly led to his death. It is for this reason that the Sunday is now called Passion Sunday, in recognition of the story that is told that day of what Jesus allowed to happen to him after praying that God's will be done.

Suggestions for Lenten Discipline

Reallocate resources
A traditional exercise in Lent has been coin cards. These cards had a slot for each day of Lent. A coin dedicated to a special ministry was put in each slot. This gift to others in need amounts to a reallocation of treasure during Lent . Not only our treasure, but also our time and ability can be reallocated. So, collect coins in container. Or, spend 15 minutes a day reaching out to family, friends, or those in need by email, letter, or phone. Or, dedicate one hour a week for some special volunteer effort.

Increase prayer
Pray at the beginning and end of each day in Lent. Or, pick some people or situations for special prayer throughout Lent. Start with written prayers (see the next page for some prayers from the LBW), then compose your own prayers using the following prayer as a model. Mention the characteristic of God which sparks your request, make the request, and state the desired effect.

Characteristic - Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid;
Request - Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
Effect - that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name,
Warrant - through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Study scripture

Read books of the Bible as you would read a novel. Suggested books are Matthew, Mark , Luke (an especially good choice since most of the Sunday readings until December will be from Luke), or Acts. Read a section a day. Pause to ask questions like “What has happened so far? What happened that I didn’t expect? What was the result? What will happen next? Who are the major characters? What are they like?“ If you finish the book before Lent ends, read it again. If you read it three times before Lent ends, select an additional book.

Keep a journal
In a small booklet, keep a daily journal of certain activities. Reflect on how you have exhibited marks of being a disciple of Jesus in your everyday life. Some marks central to following Jesus are service, peacemaking, and stewardship of God’s creation. Cite in your journal ways in which you think you have been a servant, peacemaker, or steward for each of the 40 days in Lent.
